Advisory

Decisions that shape the business rather than merely record it: structure, control, and knowing when to bring in outside input.

What advisory work actually covers

Most accounting output is a record of something that has already happened. Statutory accounts describe a year that has closed. A tax return reports income that has already been earned. Advisory runs in the other direction: it deals with decisions that have not been made yet, where the answer changes what next year's accounts will say.

In practice that comes down to a small number of recurring questions. How the business should be structured, and whether the structure chosen on day one still fits a business with staff, borrowings and outside customers. Where the money is actually going, and whether anyone sees that early enough to do something about it. What needs to be in place before the business can carry a loan, take on an investor, or serve a customer several times larger than its current biggest. And which of those genuinely needs an outside view, rather than an afternoon and an honest spreadsheet.

Advice is only as good as the records under it

Advisory is rarely a separate product bolted onto compliance work. It is usually the same underlying information — the ledger, the margins, the cash position — read with a different question in mind. That is why the quality of the advice tends to track the quality of the bookkeeping beneath it. Nobody can advise well on numbers that are three months behind, and a great deal of what looks like a strategy problem turns out to be a visibility problem.

Who these articles are for

They are written for owner-managed businesses and the people who keep their finances straight, and they assume you run a business rather than that you have an accounting background. Where a decision genuinely depends on facts specific to your situation — turnover, sector, ownership, where you operate, what you intend to do next — the articles say so instead of pretending a general rule settles it.

Where this connects to our work

If you would like a decision worked through against your own numbers, that is what our advisory and consulting service is for. It usually sits alongside accounting and bookkeeping, which supplies the information the advice depends on, and taxation, since most structural decisions have a tax consequence attached.
